What Stress Looks Like
Stress is a natural and often temporary response to demands. When you are stressed, your system becomes more alert. Stress tends to be connected to something specific — a deadline, a project, or a period of increased responsibility — and there is usually a sense that once the demand is addressed, the stress will decrease. Stress can feel intense, but it still leaves room for movement. There is still energy in the system.
What Burnout Looks Like
Burnout develops when stress becomes prolonged and recovery does not occur. Instead of feeling activated, burnout often feels like depletion. Common signs of burnout include:
- Persistent exhaustion that does not improve with rest
- Reduced motivation or difficulty starting tasks
- Feeling disconnected or indifferent toward work
- Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
- Increased irritability or emotional numbness
Responding to Stress vs. Burnout
When stress is present, focus on regulation and recovery — taking breaks, setting boundaries, and creating space for rest. When burnout is present, deeper adjustments are often needed: reevaluating workload, expectations, and patterns of behavior that contribute to ongoing exhaustion. At Trust Therapeutics, we work with professionals navigating stress and burnout in demanding environments.
