It is common for one partner to be ready for couples therapy while the other is unsure. That does not mean it cannot help, but it does help to be realistic about what is possible.
Why Partners Hesitate
Reluctance often comes from fear of being blamed, worry that therapy means the relationship is failing, or simply not knowing what to expect.
What an Initial Consultation Can Do
- Give both of you a low-pressure look at what sessions are like
- Let each person share their concerns and hopes
- Help clarify what each of you wants from the process
What It Cannot Promise
A consultation cannot guarantee a particular outcome, and therapy works best when both people are willing to participate. A therapist cannot force engagement or take sides.
How to Invite Your Partner
Frame it as wanting to strengthen things, not as a complaint. Acknowledge their concerns, and suggest a single session to see how it feels.
If Your Partner Still Says No
Individual therapy can still help you work through your own experience of the relationship and decide what you need.
